Locking Up Kids: Ruining Lives at the Taxpayer's Expense
17 Mar 2016
New figures compiled by Save the Children on Close the Gap day show that locking up Aboriginal children costs Australia $236 million a year. Indigenous kids are 26 times more likely to be incarcerated than non-Indigenous children, with most in detention yet to be sentenced. This is a shameful indictment on Australia that must change.
Labor have committed to address this issue by setting justice targets, creating a national coordinating body to collect data and measure progress, and by establishing three new sites to explore the role of#JusticeReinvestment to prevent crime and reduce incarceration.
